Proverbs 10:6 Meaning & Commentary

This verse in Proverbs contrasts the righteous and the wicked, and what are the “results” of their ways of life. Firstly, it is important to be reminded that if we are in Christ, we are the righteousness of God, so it is not through our good works and deeds that we obtain it, but it is through right standing in Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

The Bible declares that a righteous person has blessings that crown their head! A crown is something visible for others to see. A crown cannot be hidden, and neither should it be hidden! A crown represents something powerful. A King wears a crown which signifies who he is. Likewise, a righteous person should be “crowned” with blessings.

The Bible says in Proverbs 10:22 – The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. This shows that it is a blessing from The Lord which causes a man to be “rich”. When we think of the word “Blessing”, we often think of finances only, however, this is much more than just that. I often recognize a blessing over a family unit – There just seems to be peace, joy and contentment that surrounds them and their families. Contrary to a family unit which is filled with strife and disunity and constant arguing and fighting, which is the exact opposite of a blessing.

You can have all the money in the world, but what really matters (such as your family) could be falling apart around you. Proverbs 10:6 also states that violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. I see this in a two-fold light; firstly, I see this as people fighting with their mouths and their words – IE: Arguing, complaining, shouting, and yelling at others – Which represents strife and a constant state of discontentment. However, I also see this as speaking words which cause chaos to come into their lives.

You see, what is in a person’s heart will come out through their mouths, and The Bible teaches us that our words are powerful – Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. So, the wicked person has an evil heart because he is not a new creation in Christ, and because what is inside of him, comes out of his mouth and brings destruction to his life, and those around him. The righteous person however walks in the blessing of The Lord, and it shines forth as a beautiful crown for others to see!

Application

How then can we practically apply Proverbs 10:6 to our lives?

The application here is quite simple really – To walk with Christ, guard our hearts and protect what we say. We cannot earn or work for God’s blessing – It is a by-product of our relationship with God, and it is something to be received, walked in, and not to be ashamed of. We are to guard our hearts, as The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

If we guard our hearts, we will protect what comes out of our mouths and walk in the good fruit of our words, as we walk as the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus! As others see us walking in God’s blessing, may they be inspired to ask questions, which will allow us to point to Jesus Christ as the source of our blessing, who makes us rich in all things!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I thank you that I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, not because of what I have done, but because of who I am in Christ. I thank you that your blessing will crown my life and that because others will see this resting on me, this may bring you glory. Help me to guard my heart and keep it pure in your eyes, so that my words be pure and seasoned with Grace, that I may bring life through my words to myself and those around me. I ask this in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen!
