Introduction
Before getting into the meaning of Proverbs 14:34, here’s different Bible translations:

Proverbs 14:34 Meaning & Commentary
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. – Proverbs 14:34 (ESV)
Righteousness comes with a reward, but sin comes with an “unrighteous” payment. The Bible tells us that the wages of sin (the salary that it pays) is death. This applies both on an individual basis for each person, and even on a greater level in the broader context of a nation, for example. Another thing about sin is that no one likes to be on the “receiving end” of it.
For example, an individual may participate in stealing, lying, or ungodly behavior; however, should they be subject to it, they will be upset. This is why the second part of Proverbs 14:34 says, “sin is a reproach to any people.” If we think about this in the context of a nation, for example, where there is a dictator in charge and ungodly leadership, all the people of the nation will be affected. Both godly and ungodly people will suffer under the weight of “sin.” Not only that, but sin is also a “reproach” to any people in that it should not be worn as a badge of honor – it is something to be ashamed of! We understand that if we have accepted Jesus as our savior, he takes away our sins.
However, even if someone has no relationship with God, no one in their right mind with decent morals will boast about doing evil! No sober-minded person would steal from someone else and then go around bragging and telling others about it. When people do evil, they usually do their best to keep it “hidden” – this is why The Bible calls them “works of darkness”: Ephesians 5:11 – Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. However, righteousness bears good fruit in our personal lives and as a nation.
Righteousness acted on, in faith causes God to heal and bless our land: 1 Chronicles 7:14 – if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Application
How can we apply Proverbs 14:34 to our lives?
The truth is that we cannot control what other people do or do not do. However, as individuals and the body of Christ, we can effect great change in the world. Looking at the first part of Proverbs 14:34, The Bible says that righteousness exalts a nation. Therefore, we should pray for righteousness in our nations and lift our leaders in prayer constantly. We see this very same principle elsewhere in The New Testament: 1 Timothy 2:1-2 – First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
Firstly, we are urged to pray for all people. However, the verse goes on to say specifically that we need to pray for “kings and all who are in high positions.” In today’s terms, this means presidents, government leaders, and people with influence.
The Bible tells us that a throne is “established by righteousness”: Proverbs 16:12 – It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness. Therefore, we ought to pray for righteousness to prevail in our nations and that God would establish righteousness in the governing offices.
We have a responsibility to not only pray for righteousness but also to set our hearts to walk in righteousness. We see God’s “blueprint” for a righteous and exalted nation in 1 Chronicles 7:14, and it involves humbling ourselves, praying and seeking God’s face, AND turning from our wicked ways. When we do these things, God promises that our sins will be forgiven and that he will heal our land. When this happens, our nation will be exalted, and everyone will rejoice!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Word. I know that as your child, You have called me to walk in holiness. I ask right now that You forgive me for every sin, iniquity, and transgression.
Father, I also ask that You forgive the sins of my nation. I pray that You would establish righteousness in the government of my land. Let Your kingdom come, and Your will be done, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
