What are the bible proverbs about faith? Find out in this article with commentary on each verse.

Introduction

Faith is believing and trusting in God. A man with faith has confidence and assurance in God no matter the situation. Faith goes both ways. And it is active. Believers have a duty to be faithful to God. From their faith, they have security in God. For humanity, faith is a choice. You can choose to believe and trust in God or not believe in God. That is your right to exercise the free will given to humankind by God. God, on the other hand, is forever faithful.

Our own plans can lead us astray. We have no way of knowing what the future brings or the outcome of our plans. The sure way of securing the best out of life is by trusting God wholeheartedly. Having faith in God is for our own security and sanity. Imagine trusting God with your business, if something were to go wrong with the business, God is faithful to be with you and your business no matter what. God would have a way to prosper your business even during times of famine.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Having faith in God means entrusting Him completely with all aspects of your life. Having faith in God is total surrender, allowing God complete access and control of your life. Entrusting your works to him is having faith in Him that He will enable you, empower you and lead you into success, victory and triumph.

Proverbs 16:20

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.

It is better and more rewarding to have faith in the Lord, that is where the real blessings are. To go through life having faith in God is a coveted blessing. Today’s world is full of problems and complexities. Confidence in God will protect you. If human beings are faithful to God, He who is already faithful will not withhold His love and showers of blessings.

Proverbs 28:25

He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat.

God takes care of the man who has faith in Him. Without faith, it is impossible to believe, trust, and love God. The repeated theme throughout the proverbs of faith is that faith in God is a magnet to blessings and success. Faith moves God. He pleasures in blessing those who trust Him only. You cannot divide faith and have faith in different gods. For example, you cannot have faith in both witchcraft and God. Faith demands loyalty. This is what moves God, that you trust Him alone no matter how dire the situation may be.

A man with a proud heart trusts in his own ability to fight and quarrel. He trusts in his own ability to win victories. But having faith in God means that God fights your battles and you live a peaceful life, protected by God.

Proverbs 28:26

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

The opposite of faith in God is trusting in yourself. The Bible is saying following your heart is foolishness. But how many times have we watched movies that tell us to follow our hearts? The ways of the Lord are not the ways of the world. Foolishness is promoted in the world, and wisdom is found in God. A man who allows his heart to control him has no faith in God. He worships himself. He has made himself ruler over his life. Just like the Tower of Babel he has chosen self-autonomy. The Amplified calls this man a dull thickhead. This man has no security from God and his heart leads him astray.

Proverbs 30:5

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

The word of God is perfect. He does not waver. Those who trust in God take refuge in Him. You can only take refuge in a place that you trust and feel secure. When you take refuge, you go to a shelter for protection from danger or trouble. Taking refuge in God is showing Him that you have faith in His protection and leadership.

Conclusion

When we take a close look at the way that the word faith is used in the book of Proverbs, in a biblical sense, faith is a verb. It is used as an action word. Faith cannot be dormant. It has to be visible. The believers are known because of their faith in God. But if we cannot see this faith in them, how can they be identified? What is the proof of having unshakable faith in God? Faith is tangible, it is proof of unwavering belief in an omniscient God. Our faith is seen by the works we do for God.
